Maricopa boomed - some call it hypergrowth - and became the 88th incorporated city in 2003. Maricopa is seeking careful growth, environmental awareness, and a high quality of life. A census comparison reveals about 1,040 people and 329 homes in the year 2000, 15,934 people, 7,597 homes in 2005 and projections for 2010 are 35,000 to 45,000 people, 18,000 homes. Maricopa is located in the south part of the Greater Phoenix area. The city offices of Maricopa are about 35 miles from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The city of Maricopa is close to nature and surrounded by desert...lots of wide open spaces bordered by mountains, big sky, and a haven for nature loving people. Chandler and Phoenix are just a short drive so you'll never run out of things to do! World class shopping, (Arizona Mills, Chandler Fashion Center and Fiesta Mall) golfing, hiking, fabulous dining, sporting events, art and museums, theater are all near by. The Gila River Indian Reservation is to the immediate north, with Chandler and Phoenix farther north. The Ak-Chin Indian Reservation is to the immediate southwest, and Casa Grande is southeast. Maricopa, Arizona covers about 4 square miles, and the elevation of Maricopa is about 1,175 feet. Temperatures in Maricopa are not significantly different than they are in Phoenix. There may be a few degrees variance in either direction.
Scenic Attractions The scenic Estrella Mountains offer desert picnic and rock-hounding areas and petroglyphs. Him-Dak Museum, located in the Ak-Chin Indian Community features more than 700 boxes of artifacts, including pottery, stone tools, projectiles, some jewelry, carved animal bones and baskets. Harrah’s Ak-Chin casino offers slot machines, bingo, fine entertainment and dining. For the high-flying thrill seeker, Arizona Soaring is located 6.5 miles west of SR 347 and offers flight training and rides. Located in the southern part of the Maricopa planning area, groups can tour the Shamrock Farms Dairy – a delight for all family members. Annual events include the Salsa Festival every spring and the Founders’ Day celebration in October. Other activities include horseback riding, quail/dove hunting, clogging/cotton gin tours.
